I guess many of my friends know that I used to drive the big rigs. Driving one of those trucks is an amazing experience. The picture below is one of the rigs that I used to drive and it was also one of my favorite jobs. I used to work for Eagle Transport Corp. and they were and are still a great company.
Running up and down the highways of South Florida is not an easy thing to do. It gets even harder when you transport hazard materials! I remember the days at Eagle and they are all good memories. I remember delivering fuel from Key West all the way up to Vero Beach and as far west as Bonita Springs. On some instances where maybe the port of Tampa had a problem we would go further, but that was rare.
Driving this rig was a job I was proud to do. And everywhere I went at any of the stations we stopped at there would always be someone wanting to know more about the job. Most people always asked how many stops I had on the truck? They were always shocked to know that the majority of the time there was only one stop on the truck. Sometimes a split load but those were few as well.
I think the worst time for me there was during hurricane Andrew. After Andrew the running around was amazing, showing up at stations that were out of fuel and when people saw you drive into a station the lines were blocks long. My only concern was first to unload safely then be able to leave the station as well. Many cars could easily block you in.
I entered the IT field of work and with that left behind my driving. To this day even when I drive my car I still use alot of the practices that I used when driving the rigs. If I had to drive again…. which every now and then I get the urge to do so…. I would not hesitate to call Eagle and see if they are taking drivers! I wish them the best and maybe just maybe one day I will drive again.
God bless all you drivers out there….
